Evidenced-Based Practice in Autism: What is it, how do we know when we see it, and the criteria for judging a treatment to be evidenced-based
With the increase in the incidence of autism, there has been a corresponding increase in the number of treatments for this disorder. Of paramount importance is determining if a particular treatment has relevance or usefulness for a particular learner: that is, is there any reason for thinking that a particular strategy will make a difference? Only treatments that have quality research support showing effectiveness in treating autism should be disseminated for use on a widespread basis. This workshop will present information on the importance of evidenced-based treatment in autism, what constitutes quality evidence, a review common autism treatments, the extent to which each is evidenced-based, and discrete, measurable criteria of what “quality evidence” is, in the context of autism treatment. Participants will learn these criteria, learn to use a checklist to rate the quality of a treatment, and then actually use the checklist to evaluate specific autism treatments during the workshop. Participants will learn to recognize evidence of the criteria and judge it as acceptable or not. Participants will learn how to collect data that help guide decisions regarding different treatments for specific individualized goals. Participants who successfully complete the workshop will be more knowledgeable about what constitutes quality evidence and should be able to make better discriminations between quality and fad treatments. Presenters: · Dr. Mary Jane Weiss, BCBA-D Director of Research and Training The · Dr. Professor of Education, Institute for Behavioral Studies Target Audience: This workshop is appropriate for this general type of audience: paraprofessionals, BCBAs, supervisors, special education teachers, parents, and administrators.
